There are many forms of depression. Major depression is a form of affective illness that can cause disruption of social and occupational activities, sadness, hopelessness, loss of interest or pleasure, loss of appetite, insomnia or hypersomnia, suicidal ideation and other issues. Dysthymia is a less severe form of depression relative to major depression but with less acute onset and a chronic symptom picture. Other forms of depression include Adjustment Disorder with Depressed Mood and Postpartum Depression.
Therapists and counselors who specialize in this problem are often adept at cognitive therapy, couples counseling, nutrition, family therapy (among other things), and they know when to help sad people and when to refer to psychiatrists for medication assessment and prescription.
