The three main categories of Adult Eating Disorders are: Bulimia, Anorexia, and Binge or Compulsive Eating and Overeating. Therapists and counselors who specialize in this area also tend to assess related areas of potential difficulty; for example, social anxiety, a history of trauma or abuse, depression, suicidal thoughts or gestures, family conflict, couples or marriage counseling issues, and crisis counseling. Inpatient referrals are sometimes made after a proper assessment has been completed, followed by outpatient therapy and management.
Binge Eating is similar to Bulimia without the active purging component such as vomiting, use of laxatives, or excessive exercise. Clients suffering from Binge Eating but who are not purging; i.e., they do not meet the full diagnostic criteria for bulimia per se, tend to be less depressed and less trauma in their backgrounds.
