While postpartum depression can occur at any time within the first year, symptoms typically appear between two weeks to a month after delivery. What people often don’t realize is that postpartum depression can actually affect both sexes and not just the mother of the child.

Symptoms of postpartum depression

  • Anxiety at being a new parent. The new parent may feel as though they are incapable of handling all the new responsibilities and that perhaps parenthood was a wrong decision.
  • Extreme sadness and depression
  • Lack of sleep or sleeping too much
  • Lack of interest in activities
  • Decreased energy
  • Irritability and anger, sometimes at themselves and sometimes at the baby
  • Loss of appetite
